Methergine (methylergonovine maleate) Side Effects, Uses Dosages

Side Effects for Methergine (methylergonovine maleate)

Headaches, nausea, leg cramps and stiffness, diarrhea

Took methergine orally for two days to help pass retained products of conception and bleeding 8 weeks postpartum. I did not pass anything or have notable uterine cramps. I had pretty severe upper leg and hip pain and stiffness, plus intense headaches. I am still bleeding and assume I will need a d&c. If you're going to try this treatment I recommend planning for days to rest while you take it, you might feel too bad to work or do much.

Heavy bleeding after miscarriage

Some light dizziness and nausea, also pain on my inner thighs.

The only thing that bothered me and/or happened to me was sore inner thighs.

I would recommend this med if it is given to you. It helped me a great deal with the discomfort I felt for two weeks beforehand. Even the leg pain was worth taking it! Very minimal. Only sore when I stood up. So if it's short term usage I recommend taking time to hang out in bed.

post-partum excessive bleeding

hot flashes, nausea and vomiting

METHERGINE (METHYLERGONOVINE MALEATE): This medication is used after childbirth to help stop bleeding from the uterus. Methylergonovine belongs to a class of drugs known as ergot alkaloids. It works by increasing the rate and strength of contractions and the stiffness of the uterus muscles. These effects help to decrease bleeding. Initially hot flushes, vaginal dryness etc. However once I started taking Kliovance (HRT) it counteracted all side effects. Bone density scan was also ok.

I have been taking Zofran for the nausea (was prescribed for the nausea related to my herpes symptoms), and it helps somewhat. I have a severe aversion to nausea and vomiting though, so I will probably call my doctor to switch meds just because of this side effect. Cramps/pain could be related to lying down for the past week due to being unable to walk because of the pain from the herpes. I've been on a medication that makes my urine not burn my lesions as well, which also turns my urine a bright orange color. The soft stool/almost diarrhea side effect has been a godsend because regular bowel movement cause me so much pain I cry and scream, but with this, they hardly hurt.

I would like to add the following side effects: it made my osteoporosis worse, possibly because calcium needs to be absorbed in an acid environment. In addition, my hair (head and body) were thinning at an alarming rate.

I'm on my 6th month of yasmin and am experiencing extreme nausea to the point where I wake up multiple times during the night. I can hardly get through my day without having to run to the bathroom because I feel so sick. I have been to the doctor multiple times and they could not figure out what was wrong. I also had increased appetite and VERY bad mood swings, fatigue, dizziness, and headaches. For the longest time I thought I was pregnant. A strange pressure was also felt in my chest and left arm. Causes me to have awful lower back pains. Did clear up my acne and i have a shorter period now. However, I would never recommend this to anyone...the continuous nausea, back pain, heartburn, and headaches have completely changed my lifestyle-for the worst.

I started taking Macrobid on Jan 2, 2010 and completed a 7 day course. I was exhausted and had a headache and chills, but attributed it to the infection. I did notice a slight rash on my leg, but didn't attribute to macrobid. Approximately 2 weeks later the infection recurred, I was placed back on Macrobid and took about 5 pills. I had a headache, jaw, ear and neck pain. When I woke up on the 4th day of treatment, I had hives on my legs, arms, back, etc. I stopped the antibiotic, called the nurse took a benadryl. That evening the hives got worse, clinics were closed, I felt exceedingly ill and did not have the energy to do much other than take more benadryl and cover my body w/calamine. By 8am the rash was so bad that I could barely get up. When I got to the walk in clinic, I was short of breath, I had hives LITERALLY from head to toe, chills, etc and was sent to the ER. I was given prednisone and an additional antihistimine. Two days later and I am still on the course of treatment from the ER, I have hives (though they come and go...but not gently), headache, chills, hot skin, neck and ear pain. Upon picking up the first prescription for this, I looked at it and told my boyfriend that it looked like poison. I am only hoping that when the 6 days of steroid treatment ends, I the hives will be gone. It is sheer luck that I didn't take another pill, as I would likely have gone into shock. I will NEVER take this again and would strongly suggest that no one else does.

I have been competitive in road racing for almost 20 years, but after starting this drug I began to notice my performance falling off. Later I got pains so bad that I could not run. I stopped taking this drug and after about 3 months am almost back where I was with my running. I detest lawyers, but statin class drugs are crying out for a class action lawsuit to stop their use.

I was prescribed Macrobid about 7 months ago for a UTI (which I get often). It worked fine then and I had no adverse reactions. I had three pills leftover from that round 7 months ago, and took one of them a few weeks ago for a minor UTI that I felt coming on. Took the pill before bed, woke up in the middle of the night with severe chills and fever. At the time I thought I must have contracted a virus, even though I never get sick like that and I get my flu shot every year. However, I was prescribed Macrobid again for a UTI two days ago, and a few hours after my first dose that morning, the SAME symptoms started again! Felt like I was dying of the flu for over 24 hours! Couldn't even get out of bed, slept for 18 hours and was basically miserable. Called my doctor and had to go back in today to "re-evaluate" my symptoms. He said that my reaction to this medication is "very rare" but he prescribed Cipro instead (which I have taken before with no side effects). I think the Dr. saying these symptoms are rare is ridiculous, seeing as how many people on here have had the EXACT SAME reactions as me! You'd think they would keep up to date on these sorts of things! I will definitely not be taking Macrobid ever again!
