Side Effects for Sprintec (ethinyl estradiol; norgestimate)

SPRINTEC (ETHINYL ESTRADIOL; NORGESTIMATE): This combination hormone medication is used to prevent pregnancy. It contains 2 hormones: a progestin and an estrogen. It works mainly by preventing the release of an egg (ovulation) during your menstrual cycle. It also makes vaginal fluid thicker to help prevent sperm from reaching an egg (fertilization) and changes the lining of the uterus (womb) to prevent attachment of a fertilized egg. If a fertilized egg does not attach to the uterus, it passes out of the body. Besides preventing pregnancy, birth control pills may make your periods more regular, decrease blood loss and painful periods, decrease your risk of ovarian cysts, and also treat acne. Using this medication does not protect you or your partner against sexually transmitted diseases (such as HIV, gonorrhea, chlamydia). (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

Took 40mg time release capsule for five weeks for non-cardiac chest pain (after eating). This drug made my chest pain worse, and much more frequent, and also caused a bunch off odd side effects: muscle pain and weakness, particularly in my legs (the pharmacist confirmed this is a side effect), made my existing insomnia MUCH worse (cut my sleep time from 4-6 hrs to 2-3), had shooting stomach pain for the first week I was on it. So, this med not only gave me a bunch of side effects, but made the chest pain (the reason I was on it) worse! About a week after I stopped taking it all these side effects reversed. I altered my diet and chest pain rarely occurs now.

I have to ask myself why I put off taking this drug for so long. My pain was so bad, I was miserable and my quality of life sucked. I rarely went out with friends and was no fun to be around because I was in constant pain. Within just a couple of weeks after the first shot everything changed. I feel great. I had forgotten how great it is to not deal with pain everyday. My doctor started me on the 30 day shot to ensure I could manage the side effects. I waited exactly 30 days to get the 2nd shot and 2 to 3 days before the shot I started to experience pain and other symptoms associated with my endometriosis. We opted to do the 3rd shot earlier and I experienced none of my previous problems. My doctor is only keeping me on a six month treatment and I can only hope that the medicine builds up and I get the years of relief that have been reported with this medicine. I can't imagine having to go back to the way I was before. I feel like a different person. I am able to go out and have fun with my frieds, I went on vacation, and get along better with my family. I consider it my miracle.

I have never been great about taking medications daily, so the symptoms kept coming and going. It was the nausea that finally made me look up side effects. After reading other symptoms on this site I was able to realize why I have been such "nut case" the last several months. I have been concerned about a sudden increase in blood pressure. I already suffered from migraines, but could not figure out why I was having them so frequently with no known triggers. I have been withdrawing now for two days; I am so sick.

For the first month I experienced severe mood swings, I felt angry all the time and began to break out even more with painful cystic acne. Thought by month 2 it would subside but it didn't ! Mood swings would come and go but the acne issue is still there and my main reason for going on this BC was for the acne. It's worked well with my period, cramps are very light as well as my period but overall I'm not pleased. I would stick around for month 3 since your body is suppose to get use to the hormones around this time but this BC is not for me.
