Malarone (atovaquone; proguanil hydrochloride) Side Effects, Uses Dosages

Side Effects for Malarone (atovaquone; proguanil hydrochloride)

May of 2014 we went on a mission trip to west Africa. Almost 3 years later and I'm just now able to get out of my home with a desire to do so. I have prayed for death continuously. I have research day and night to recover from this torture. I was never told of the side effects of this drug or the vaccine drugs I was given for the mission trip. Please do your research, it isn't a quick fix if you're unfortunate enough to be harmed by it. No doctor has helped me, 26 doctors, and I am recovering on my own.

To the previous poster, I apologize. I did research on adverse psychiatric side effects from malarone, and it appears it can cause them. I even read a dutch case series documenting the onset of psychotic disorder within days of taking atovaquone/proguanil

Again, I am sorry for posting that comment while being ill informed on the side effecs and dangers. Has anyone had lasting problems due to malarone?

The previous comment is not correct. Malarone DOES cause nervous system side effects similar to that of Mefloquine/Lariam, but "less frequently than Lariam," according to the manufacturer, GlaxoSmithKline, based on trials conducted prior to FDA approval.Malarone side effects can include vivid dreams, insomnia, anxiety, headaches, seizures, psychotic episodes, and myriad other neurological/psychiatric issues.

Most people here are mixing up Mefloquin with Malarone. They are listing well known side effects of Mefloquine (Lariam), such as paranoia, hallucinations, insomnia and even suicide. Malarone can't do this! It doesn't have psychiatric side effects listed in the label and is widely known as being the best tolerates antimalarial there is.

Committed suicide after taking it

Insomnia, lightheadedness, headache, impaired cognitive function, tinnitus, red/irritated eyes and vision issues, muscle weakness/twitching/fatigue, pain, diarrhea, peeling skin and mouth sores.

Nightmares and anxiety attacks every single evening.

nightmares and bad dreams every night. paranoia and anxiety.

My husband took malarone for 60 days and commited suicide. Had nightmares and became paranoid, etc.

After having hallucinations while on Lariam, I was very glad to find an anti-malarial that allowed me to travel safely!

it has only been seven days since i started taking malarone. nightmares are becoming more consistent. I can't sleep for longer than 4 hours. very vivid nightmares wake me up.

I took Malarone for a little over 2 months during my stay in Ghana. I had a strange rash that lasted for a few days that I could only contribute to the Malarone but other than that I had no problem with it.

Travelled to Venezuela for 2 weeks

Severe and constant nightmares when taken before bed.

I know nightmares isn't one of the advertised side effects of Malarone but both my boyfriend and I had really awful nightmares every single night. He is a grown man and wouldn't even tell me about some of them because he was so upset. We rarely had nightmares before. It got to the point we didn't even want to go to bed like in Freddy Krueger movies. We were taking the tablets at night so after a few days we started to take them in the mornings and the nightmares stopped. Other than that we had no side effects and didn't get malaria!

Larium was unpleasant to take. I am very happy to have this alternative. For me, Malarone seems to have practically no side effects.

malaria treatment / curative dose

MUCH better than Larium. I had no side effects at all.

MALARONE (ATOVAQUONE; PROGUANIL HYDROCHLORIDE): This medication contains 2 medicines: atovaquone and proguanil. It is used to prevent and treat malaria caused by mosquito bites in countries where malaria is common. Malaria parasites can enter the body through these mosquito bites, and then live in body tissues such as red blood cells or the liver. This medication is used to kill the malaria parasites living inside red blood cells and other tissues. In some cases, you may need to take a different medication (such as primaquine) to complete your treatment. Both medications may be needed for a complete cure and to prevent the return of infection (relapse). Atovaquone/proguanil belongs to a class of drugs known as antimalarials. The United States Centers for Disease Control provide updated guidelines and travel recommendations for the prevention and treatment of malaria in different parts of the world. Discuss the most recent information with your doctor before traveling to areas where malaria occurs. (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

When I was on cardizem 120 my chest pain wasn't so bad, had an increase a month later and my angina that was controlled started again and my palpitatitions that had stopped mostly started back. And I started having more tightness in my chest. Not sure if it's even lowering my blood pressure much. My pressures stay around the higher 130s and 145 over lighter 80s and 90s.

Migraine several days after injection, right upper groin ache,

Unable to lie down and sleep. Two days after initial dosage I feel terrible. I will not take this drug ever again.

Dry mouth, daytime grogginess when I first started taking it

VERY tired for the first few days, MILD Nausea

I've only been on the shot for a week now, but, side effects have been minimal so far. I'm also taking aygestin. Mood swing, "vein" pain in legs, wrist and finger pain (on a scale from 1-10, it's about a 2).

Tried detoxing off heroin using methadone. Was on MMT for 5 years, the last 2 1/2 detoxing. Could not get past 32mg's w/out ending up in the E.R.. Decided to try Suboxone. Started at 16mg's/day and weened myself down to 1.5 mg's/day, NOT following my drs' orders. I know enough that you should get off this as quick as possible, unless you use it as treatment, or you become very dependant, and w/drawals will last longer than needed. People need to know that you need to get to a VERY LOW dose, (less than 1mg/day), for w/drawals to be tolerable. Everyone trying to detox off this should learn about the "liquid taper" method. That's the only way to get your dose real low and accurate. I use an empty asprin bottle, crush up an 8mg pill, then add 8ml's of water to make a liquid, then use a childs med dropper to suck up what I need. This way I know I'm getting .5 mg's everytime I dose. It's WAY better than methadone detox, but if you can, detox off your DOC instead of either of these two drugs. The half-life is a real bitch to get use to. Plus the cost is insane. $350.00 just to see the dr., then almost $600.00/month for the script. Massive rip-off. So far, on a scale of 1-10, 10 being super sick, detoxing off Subs is a 5 or 6. Wish I would have just kept detoxing off heroin instead of going down these roads, but it does allow you to get your head straightened out.

I want start off saying that I gave this pill 3 months bc that's the recommended amount of time for your body to adjust. Three months too long! This pill is awful! The third month was actually the worst. I read the reviews before taking it and after my Dr prescribed it to me. I was scared bc of all the negative reviews, but I understand everyone reacts differently, so I gave it a chance. The only positive thing about this pill was that my period was light and short. 2-3 days and light bleeding, but my period never came on the same day and sometimes started a week early. I had severe moodiness and would get so angry about the littlest things. I would even ask myself why I was getting so upset. I gained 10-15 lbs during the 3 months of being on this pill. I was bloated from the first couple of days being on this pill. I slowly became very depressed and withdrew from people bc every little thing would upset me or annoy me. My face broke out do easily. I read a few people saying they need to take this pill off the market and I thought they were being dramatic, but now I totally agree with them! I've been off the pill for only 3 days now and starting to feel back to my normal self. Thank goodness! I gave energy and not feeling depressed or bloated. I honestly felt pregnant on this pill between the bloating and crazy mood swings. I'll be switching back to Ortho Tri Cyclen next month. Giving my body time to adjust from not taking this pill. I'm writing this to warn others about this

I'm on a diet and working out like crazy... I can't lose the weight. I've been spotting pretty heavily now for over a month... at fist I was getting bad cramps, which have gone. I have no sex drive at all. I'm getting off of them... not worth it.

I wish they would put more information in their prescription insert about possible weight gain and possible trouble getting off the drug.
